PM Modi's Mann Ki Baat revives Kashmir's forgotten Wagoo mat tradition
PM Modi's Mann Ki Baat highlights Kashmir's traditional Wagoo mat, giving fresh momentum to artisans working to revive the centuries-old handwoven craft.
The revival of Kashmir's traditional Wagoo mat has received a major boost after Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the centuries-old handwoven craft in the 136th episode of Mann Ki Baat on Sunday. Once a common feature in Kashmiri homes, the eco-friendly Wagoo mat, woven from reeds and paddy straw collected from Kashmir's wetlands, had gradually faded from everyday use. Each mat takes nearly four days to weave by hand.
During his address, the Prime Minister praised the dedication of Srinagar artisan Ghulam Hussain and his daughter Tanzila, who have committed themselves to reviving the traditional craft. Hussain expressed happiness over the recognition and credited former handicrafts director Mohammad Shah for promoting their work and helping secure a GI tag. Tanzila thanked the Prime Minister, saying the mention had encouraged artisans associated with the craft.
