Bodh Gaya, one of the most revered places in the world for Buddhists, is situated in south Bihar.  It is believed to be the site where Lord Buddha attained enlightenment, attracting devotees and pilgrims from across the globe.

Yet, tourism stakeholders and residents who rely on visitors for their livelihoods say the town’s potential remains underutilised due to inadequate connectivity.  According to them, limited air and rail links are discouraging tourists from making the journey to the revered site.

With the Union Budget approaching, stakeholders are calling on the Finance Minister to address these gaps by improving transport infrastructure, particularly air and railway connectivity, to support the growth of tourism in the region.

According to Rakesh Kumar, President of the Tour and Guide Association of Bihar, "The facilities here are far less than what they should be. For example, we have repeatedly requested the government to introduce direct flights from Gujarat, South India, and the North East. We have also specifically demanded direct flights from Vietnam and other Buddhist countries. However, so far, our requests have not been accepted. Even in terms of railways, the facilities are limited, with only a few seats available."

In addition to connectivity, tourism organisations are looking for financial assistance and policy support to boost the industry.

Meanwhile, Sandeep Kumar, President of the Tour and Travel Association:

"Special attention must be given to connectivity, particularly at Gaya Airport. Connectivity should be improved from different international airports and other locations from where tourists come. The number of domestic flights should also be increased. New tourist infrastructure should be developed, and existing facilities should be strengthened. Additionally, people working in the tourism sector should be given some incentives or tax rebates."

Bodh Gaya stakeholders anticipate that the government will announce policies that enhance the town's accessibility and help realise its full tourism potential when the Union Budget is presented on February 1.
