Iran under pressure as protests grow and US tensions escalate
Iran is grappling with escalating internal protests and intensifying tensions with the United States.
Inside the country, protests against the Islamic regime are gaining momentum, with demonstrations turning increasingly violent. Authorities have responded by imposing a near-total internet blackout in an effort to suppress dissent. At the same time, tens of thousands of pro-government supporters have taken to the streets, highlighting the deep divisions within Iranian society.
Externally, tensions between Tehran and Washington are escalating. The United States and Iran are exchanging sharp warnings, even as both sides signal a possible willingness to negotiate. US President Donald Trump claims Iran’s leadership has reached out for talks, but he has also issued a stark warning, saying the US could take military action if the situation deteriorates further.
Iran’s leadership has adopted a defiant stance. The foreign minister has said Tehran does not seek war but is fully prepared for one. The speaker of Iran’s parliament has warned President Trump of an “unforgettable lesson” if the US launches an attack. Tehran has also declared that US and Israeli forces would be legitimate targets in the event of any strike, accusing both countries of stoking internal unrest.
These developments come as Iran is still recovering from a 12-day conflict with Israel in June, during which the United States bombed Iranian nuclear sites. The economic toll is also deepening. Since the reimposition of UN sanctions over Iran’s nuclear programme, the rial has fallen sharply, adding to public anger and financial strain.
Caught between growing street protests and intensifying pressure from the United States, Iran appears more vulnerable than it has been in years. Whether the crisis is resolved through diplomacy or descends into open conflict may be decided in the days ahead.
