In a unique prison rehabilitation initiative, inmates at Chhindwara District Jail are crafting scientifically designed birdhouses and feeders for sparrows and other native birds, combining skill development with wildlife conservation. The birdhouse kits, priced at ₹300, include a QR code that provides instructions on installation, maintenance, and suitable feed for different bird species.

The programme helps prisoners learn practical skills while preparing for life after their release. Inmate Ganesh Tamulkar said the project reflects the belief that birds deserve safe homes just as people do, adding that the initiative also sends a positive message to society.

Jail Superintendent Pratik Jain said citizens and organisations can support the initiative by purchasing the kits. The QR code also guides users on the ideal locations for mounting the birdhouses.

After deducting production costs, part of the proceeds will be paid to the inmates, helping them build savings for the future while contributing to bird conservation and environmental awareness.
