The much-anticipated Malayalam action thriller ‘Patriot’, headlined by industry stalwarts Mohanlal and Mammootty, has completed five days in cinemas. While its domestic figures remain below expectations, the film has benefitted significantly from overseas markets, pushing its global gross past the ₹70 crore mark. Despite a steady start, the film’s India collections have struggled to maintain momentum.

Domestic collections

‘Patriot’ saw a noticeable decline on its fifth day, earning ₹1.50 crore from 1,826 screenings. As per Sacnilk data, the Malayalam occupancy rate stood at a modest 14.29%. Compared with Monday’s revenue, Tuesday registered an 11.8% drop, further widening the gap between early projections and its actual performance.

So far, the film has amassed ₹24.85 crore net in India, with a gross tally of ₹28.83 crore. The slowdown is evident: after a strong opening at ₹10 crore on Friday, earnings dipped to ₹6.15 crore on day 2, ₹5.50 crore on day 3, and ₹1.70 crore on day 4, before slipping again to ₹1.50 crore on day 5. The film is expected to cross ₹25 crore domestically on day six.

Although respectable for a Malayalam release without a pan-India push, the domestic outcome remains below the level anticipated for a historic pairing like Mohanlal and Mammootty.

Overseas market lifts global total

Internationally, ‘Patriot’ has fared considerably better. The overseas market contributed ₹41.50 crore across its first five days, substantially outpacing domestic numbers and lifting the worldwide total to ₹71 crore (excluding Tuesday’s overseas earnings yet to be confirmed).

The foreign box office, however, has also seen its own decline: opening at ₹16.50 crore on Friday, the numbers slid to ₹13 crore on Saturday, ₹9 crore on Sunday, and ₹2 crore on Monday. Still, the combined overseas performance has been strong enough to push the film over the ₹70 crore global threshold.

In crossing that mark, ‘Patriot’ has already surpassed by ₹7 crore the total worldwide earnings of Mammootty and Mohanlal’s previous collaboration, Joshiy’s ‘Twenty:20’ (2008), which had collected ₹32 crore worldwide.

Plot and themes

The film centres on a network of undercover agents who uncover a large-scale espionage operation threatening national security. A key element of the story is Periscope, a spyware capable of covertly listening to ordinary citizens. The programme is linked to a company owned by a minister’s son, prompting Daniel James, a senior official, to expose the truth.

At a recent event in Dubai, Mammootty addressed the divisive audience reactions, underlining the relevance of the narrative.

"We are living in an era where privacy is increasingly lost, and the film Patriot addresses this relevant subject."

He added, "There will be different views – good, bad, partly good, mostly good… Films are made with the intention of being enjoyed by all."
