The teaser of The Silent Saviour: Governor was unveiled on May 7, giving audiences a first look at Manoj Bajpayee as an RBI Governor attempting to steer India through one of the country’s most severe economic emergencies. The film comes from the makers of The Kerala Stories, adding further attention to the project ahead of its release.

The film is reportedly inspired by S. Venkitaramanan, who served as Governor of the Reserve Bank of India during the 1991 balance-of-payments crisis. However, the makers have not officially confirmed whether Bajpayee’s character is directly based on him.

Directed by Chinmay Mandlekar and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, the film explores the economic turmoil that pushed India to the brink during the early 1990s.

At the time, India faced rapidly depleting foreign exchange reserves and mounting financial pressure. The crisis forced the government to pledge gold reserves and introduce sweeping liberalisation reforms that opened the economy to global investment and private capital.

The film focuses on the difficult decisions taken during that period and how policy reforms helped stabilise the economy. These changes later became the foundation for India’s economic expansion, growth in the services sector and the rise of the IT industry.

The screenplay has been written by Suvendu Bhattacharyjee, Saurabh Bharat and Ravi Asrani, while music for the film has been composed by Amit Trivedi with lyrics by Javed Akhtar.

The teaser has already sparked interest among both cinema audiences and those interested in India’s economic history, as mainstream films rarely explore the country’s financial and policy-driven turning points.

The Silent Saviour: Governor is scheduled to release in theatres on June 12, 2026.
