The long-awaited Justice Hema Committee report, investigating the harassment faced by women in the Malayalam cinema industry, was released on Monday. This report highlights the widespread and ongoing sexual harassment that many women in the industry face, with some alleging that they were subjected to unwanted advances even before starting their work. Now the report is out, will its findings lead to meaningful change in the Malayalam movie industry? TAKE OUR POLL

One of the most shocking revelations in the report is the allegation that a "criminal gang" controls the industry, targeting women who refuse to comply with their demands. The panel also pointed out the existence of a "power nexus" involving a small group of producers, directors, actors, and production controllers who wield significant influence.

The report strongly recommended that police register FIRs for crimes committed in the industry, noting that many victims are too afraid to come forward, fearing for their lives. The 300-page report, originally submitted in December 2019, includes extensive documentation, along with audio and video evidence, supporting its findings.

The report quoted one artist who shared that those who attempt to seek justice through the courts or police face even worse consequences, including threats to their lives. The artist also mentioned that not only the victims but also their close family members could be in danger.

The Justice Hema Committee is the first of its kind in India, established to investigate the challenges faced by women in the film industry, including issues of sexual harassment and unequal working conditions.

The Kerala government formed this panel after the 2017 actress assault case involving actor Dileep, aiming to address the concerns raised by the Women in Cinema Collective, a union representing women in the Malayalam film industry.
