India’s first fully digital census, 2027, introduces a new self-enumeration facility, allowing citizens to submit household details online before an enumerator visits. The move is designed to make the process faster, more accurate and more convenient.

A census is the official nationwide count of people and households. Conducted once every 10 years under the Census Act, 1948, it collects information on population, housing, education, occupation and social conditions. The data supports welfare schemes, policy decisions, constituency delimitation and resource allocation.
Why Census 2027 data is being collected in two phases:
To improve data quality and manage the large-scale exercise efficiently, Census 2027 will happen in two stages:
Stage One: Recording household and housing information
collects details on:
- Housing conditions
- Drinking water access
- Toilets and sanitation
- Electricity supply
- Cooking fuel
- Internet access
- Household assets
Stage Two: Collecting individual population details
records:
- Name, age and sex
- Caste and religion
- Education and occupation
- Language and migration
- Disability details
- Fertility information for married women
Steps to submit your census details online
- Visit the official platform to begin the process.
- Choose your location and complete captcha verification.
- Register your household information
Enter your details such as:
- Name of household head
- Mobile number
- Optional email address
- Verify your details through the OTP sent to your registered contact.
- Select Your Preferred Language: You can choose English or any Indian language that is available.
- Fill in the required household and personal details carefully.
- After submission, you will receive an 11-digit Self-Enumeration ID beginning with “H”.
- Share the ID when census officials visit for final confirmation.
Important things to remember:
- Self-enumeration is optional but encouraged.
- You can save progress and edit before the deadline.
- After submission, only limited corrections can be made.
- The portal works only within India.
- Census participation remains mandatory.
Self-enumeration windows will open state-wise for 15 days before house-to-house visits begin under Phase I between April and September 2026. Phase II date is officially scheduled for February 2027
