India’s first fully digital census, 2027, introduces a new self-enumeration facility, allowing citizens to submit household details online before an enumerator visits. The move is designed to make the process faster, more accurate and more convenient.

Understanding Census 2027 and why it matters

A census is the official nationwide count of people and households. Conducted once every 10 years under the Census Act, 1948, it collects information on population, housing, education, occupation and social conditions. The data supports welfare schemes, policy decisions, constituency delimitation and resource allocation.

  • Housing conditions
  • Drinking water access
  • Toilets and sanitation
  • Electricity supply
  • Cooking fuel
  • Internet access
  • Household assets

Stage Two: Collecting individual population details

  • Name, age and sex
  • Caste and religion
  • Education and occupation
  • Language and migration
  • Disability details
  • Fertility information for married women
