Thiruvananthapuram: Migration of non-residents into Kerala, as well as the movement of Malayalis to other states, is increasing the risk of HIV transmission in the state, according to the State AIDS Control Society. The infection prevalence is 0.20 per cent nationally and 0.07 per cent in Kerala.

For the past three years, Ernakulam district has recorded the highest number of new HIV infections in the state, numbering 850. Thiruvananthapuram has reported 555 cases, while Thrissur recorded 518.

Project Director Dr Piyush M Namboothiripad said the State AIDS Control Society is currently focusing on ensuring early testing and treatment for individuals who may have been exposed to infection.

Kerala has achieved its targets in both viral load suppression and ensuring treatment for those infected. This year’s World AIDS Day message highlights resilience in the face of challenges and advancing preventive efforts.
