The priest made the remarks at a family gathering held at St Thomas School in Thiruvananthapuram

Thiruvananthapuram: Rev. Dr K. Thomas, a priest-trustee of the Mar Thoma Church, has said that marriages among young men and women in the church should be solemnised only after they undergo HIV tests.
The priest made the remarks at a family gathering held at St Thomas School in Thiruvananthapuram on August 30. A section of the church community has come forward alleging that the remarks were insulting to young people in the church.
“Karnataka government is conducting HIV tests on all campuses. I wish that all marriages solemnised in the Mar Thoma Church should also be conducted only after undergoing such tests. When bringing a 27-year-old daughter to the church as a bride, one should be able to ensure that she has not been abused,” Rev. Dr K. Thomas said.
Youth representatives have demanded that the priest apologise for publicly humiliating young people who are brought up with dignity and regarded as the pride of the church. They also urged the Metropolitan to take action over the remarks.
Meanwhile, Rev Dr K. Thomas said that he had made the remarks with good intentions.
He said he was addressing parents at the family gathering and was only trying to create awareness. He also maintained that the church has the freedom to discuss such matters within its community.
