María Corina Machado represents the hope for a better future where people’s basic rights are protected and their voices are heard. In that future, everyone will be free to live in peace.

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has won the Nobel Peace Prize for her work promoting democracy and fighting dictatorship in her country. She was chosen for her courage and dedication in standing up to President Nicolás Maduro's government and for leading a peaceful struggle to bring freedom and fair elections to the people of Venezuela.
While announcing the prize, Nobel Committee Chairman Jorgen Watne Frydnes called María Corina Machado a 'brave and committed champion of peace' who 'keeps the flame of democracy burning even in difficult times'.
María Corina Machado leads the fight for democracy in Venezuela against President Nicolás Maduro's rule. She has helped unite different opposition groups that were once split and weak, making them work together for a common goal -- free and fair elections and a government chosen by the people.
Earlier this year, María Corina Machado came out of hiding to gather support from opposition leaders and citizens against President Nicolás Maduro's plan to begin his third six-year term. Soon after, the government arrested her for a short time, showing how dangerous it is for anyone to speak out against Maduro's rule in Venezuela.
María Corina Machado was banned from running in the 2024 presidential election against President Nicolás Maduro, so she supported Edmundo González, a candidate from another party. Even though she could not contest, she still brought together thousands of volunteers from different political groups to monitor polling stations and protect the people's vote.
After President Nicolás Maduro claimed victory in the disputed election, María Corina Machado promised to keep fighting for the truth. She said, "We are going to defend the truth. Everyone knows what really happened and what they are trying to hide." Her words showed her determination to expose election fraud and stand up for the people’s choice in Venezuela.
Nobel Committee Chairman Jorgen Watne Frydnes said that María Corina Machado has shown that the tools of democracy -- such as free speech, unity, and peaceful protest -- are also the tools of peace.

Other leading names for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize included volunteers from Sudan's Emergency Response Rooms, Russian opposition leader Yulia Navalnaya, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. President Donald Trump always showed a strong desire to win the Nobel Peace Prize. In his meetings and speeches, he often talked about it.
