Born and raised in Durban, South Africa, Pillay pursued legal studies and began practicing in 1967 when she established her own firm. During the apartheid era, she earned prominence by defending political activists, including Nelson Mandela, establishing a lifelong commitment to anti-discrimination and universal legal protections. She later earned her Doctor of Juridical Science degree from Harvard University in 1988.
International legal milestones
Following the end of apartheid, Pillay was appointed to the High Court of South Africa in 1995. Her career subsequently transitioned to the global stage, where she served in landmark judicial roles:

International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR): As a judge and President of the ICTR, she established historic precedent by defining sexual violence and systemic rape as instruments of genocide and crimes against humanity.
