One of the highlights of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Ukraine, which is currently engaged in battle with Russia, will be a demonstration of the BHISHM Cube, a unique mobile hospital made in India for disaster management.
Developed as part of project BHISHM -- Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog Hita and Maitri -- the Aarogya Maitri Cubes is the first-ever mobile hospital designed for emergencies. It can be airlifted and is compactly packed into 72 cubes for transport.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) recently effectively tested the use of the BHISHMA portable hospital, known as the Battle Field Health Information System for Medical Services.
In February 2022, the Bhishma project was introduced, leading the Defense Ministry to establish a task force for this effort. At the Global South Summit in January 2023, Prime Minister Modi unveiled the 'Aarogya Maitri' initiative, through which India plans to offer crucial medical aid to any developing nation impacted by natural disasters or humanitarian emergencies.
What Is The BHISHM Cube?
The lightweight portable hospital, weighing 720 kg, is designed to be air-dropped by an Indian Air Force transport aircraft from a height of 1,500 feet.
This is made possible by two custom parachutes created by the Agra-based Air Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE).
After landing, the hospital can be operational within just 12 minutes. Shaped like a cube, this waterproof and lightweight structure can be assembled using various methods such as aircraft and drones.
The portable hospital includes two special cages called master cubes that can be combined to accommodate up to 200 survivors.
How Is The BHISHM Cube Deployed?
Inspired by the "Rubik's Cube," these lightweight cubes, each under 20kg, can be easily carried by hand for distances up to one kilometer, allowing for quick deployment to disaster-affected areas.
Within each master cube are 36 smaller cubes containing advanced tools that improve disaster response and offer medical aid in emergencies.
These cubes utilize artificial intelligence (AI) and data analysis for smooth coordination, real-time monitoring, and efficient management of medical services at the location.
What Does Each BHISHM Cube Have?
The portable hospital is equipped with cutting-edge medical facilities, including an operating theatre, X-ray machines, blood testing equipment, ventilators, and supplies for treating a range of injuries like gunshot wounds, burns, fractures, and severe bleeding. This hospital plays a vital role during emergencies.
How Much Does Each BHISHM Cube Cost?
The project costs around Rs 1.5 crore per unit, featuring rapid deployment capabilities and including essentials like a small generator, stretchers, modular medical tools, medications, and food supplies.
Its sustainability and operational efficiency are further boosted by utilizing solar power and batteries.
A notable feature of the Cube is its advanced medical equipment, tagged with RFID for easy repacking and redeployment.
The cutting-edge BHISHM software system, accessible through a tablet, enables operators to swiftly find items, track their usage and expiration dates, and ensure they are prepared for future missions.
