Kochi (Kerala) The arrival of the mango showers has caused a huge drop in pineapple prices across Kerala, according to the Pineapple Growers Association. In just 20 days, prices for ripe, raw, and special raw pineapples have plummeted by approximately Rs 26.

Currently, the price for ripe pineapple stands at Rs 27, raw pineapple at Rs 24, and special raw pineapple at Rs 26. Data from the Merchants Association reveals that on Saturday, the prices of ripe, raw and special pineapples were Rs 24, Rs 24 and Rs 26 respectively, bringing prices back to 2021 levels. Expectations that pineapple prices might soar to Rs 60 were quickly dashed by the rains, marking a sharp reversal in price trends.

Farmers have reported a 50% increase in pineapple production, contributing to the fall in prices due to oversupply. In 2021, pineapples were priced at Rs 27, but prices steadily rose in the following years, peaking above Rs 65 last year. This price drop has encouraged many farmers to focus on pineapple cultivation, expecting a more profitable return.

Opportunities for value-added products amid price drop

Despite the price decline, demand for pineapples remains robust, especially during the wedding season. Farmers and traders see this as a prime opportunity to focus on value-added pineapple products. Many are opting to store pineapples in advance of the rains, allowing them to sell later at higher prices and mitigate potential losses. This strategy ensures that farmers can still benefit from the high demand, even when prices dip temporarily.
