Kochi: The price of pineapples has declined significantly in the state. However, farmers rule out any crisis, thanks to high market demand. According to the Pineapple Growers Association, within two weeks, the price has dropped by ₹14. On November 10, the price was ₹48 per kilogram. However, by Thursday, it had decreased to ₹34. Similarly, the price of raw pineapples fell from ₹41 to ₹27, and the price of special-grade pineapples declined from ₹48 to ₹29.
The Pineapple Growers Association, however, has clarified that the price drop is within normal levels and that there is no major crisis in the market.
Generally, during November, December and January, when production increases, such price drops are common. However, compared to previous years, the decrease this time is not huge.
Usually, when prices drop, farmers face considerable losses. However, this time, despite the decline in prices, farmers are not experiencing major losses.
In Vazhakkulam, a primary market for pineapples in the state, fruits are being sold without much delay. Pineapples are being transported in small loads to various processing units and other destinations.
Farmers report that pineapples are available in abundance, and sales are progressing well. With the Sabarimala pilgrimage season underway, many from other states also are purchasing pineapples in large quantities.
Currently, daily production is around 1,500–2,000 tonnes. Although the price has dropped, the farmers are not much affected as the crop is requiring minimal care owing to favourable weather conditions. However, there is concern that heavy rains might affect the market.
Seasonal fruit abundance and high onion prices drive market trends
The availability of seasonal fruits, including oranges, this time has also contributed to pulling down pineapple prices. The high price of onions also has influenced market dynamics. Trucks that usually transport goods to northern India have seen reduced loads due to the scarcity of onions. This shift has also affected pineapple prices.
In the past year, pineapple shipments to northern India via trucks have contributed to Kerala’s transport dynamics as the trucks that carry pineapple used to bring onions while returning to the state. However, with the conclusion of the Diwali season, trucks transporting pineapple have taken longer to return due to the scarcity of onions. This has reduced the shipment of pineapples to northern India, contributing to the price decline.
