After a short pause, pineapple prices in Kerala are on the rise again. The Vazhakkulam Pineapple Growers Association has reported that the current price of green pineapple is Rs 51 per kg, and the special grade green variety is priced at Rs 53 per kg. This marks the highest price for green pineapples in 10 years.
Last year, during the same time, pineapples were priced at Rs 50 per kg. The price of ripe pineapple has now increased by Rs7, making it Rs 57 now. While green pineapples have seen an increase of 11 for the special grade variety.
On September 1, green pineapples were selling for Rs 40 per kg, with the special grade priced at Rs 42 per kg. This sudden rise in price is due to growing demand, especially in North Indian markets.
Growing demand during festival season
The upcoming festival season, with celebrations like Dussehra and Diwali, has led to a surge in inquiries for pineapples from neighboring states.
Traders expect prices to continue rising through October. Farmers have already started preparing to meet this increased demand by increasing the production. It is estimated that pineapple production will reach 1,500 tonnes per day by October.
On Saturday, a truckload of green pineapples, weighing 10 tonnes, was sold at Rs 53 per kg. This demand is not only limited to local markets, but pineapple plants from Kerala are also being sent to other states. Farmers of Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh are looking to expand their pineapple farming due to the rising demand in the North Indian market.
This year’s summer heat caused a setback for pineapple farmers. Drought conditions affected the crops, reducing production. However, with the festive season approaching, farmers are hopeful that October will bring enough sales to make up for the earlier losses.
