Why CBSE introduced the dual-board system

The 2026 academic year marked the introduction of CBSE's two-phase board examination system. The move was designed to provide students with an additional opportunity to improve their performance without waiting for a separate compartment examination cycle.

Students dissatisfied with their first attempt or looking to improve their marks were allowed to appear in the second session examination held between May 15 and May 21.

According to available data, around 6.68 lakh candidates registered under the combined compartment and improvement categories in the new two-phase examination system. Of these, more than 85,000 students enrolled under the compartment category.

Students must secure the minimum qualifying marks prescribed by CBSE in each subject and overall to be declared successful. The board is expected to release complete result statistics once the results are officially announced.
