Authorities have declared a holiday for educational institutions in Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod districts on June 9 as heavy rainfall and Red Alert warnings raise concerns over flooding and weather-related disruptions.

Kochi: Heavy monsoon rains continue to batter Kerala, prompting district administrations to declare a holiday for schools, colleges and other educational institutions in Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod on Tuesday, June 9.
The decision follows Red Alert warnings issued for Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod, with forecasts indicating extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds. Officials cited concerns over waterlogging, flooding and the possibility of weather-related accidents as reasons for suspending classes.

In Kozhikode, the holiday applies to all educational institutions, including schools, professional colleges, madrasas, tuition centres and Anganwadis. Authorities clarified that university examinations and PSC examinations will be conducted as scheduled.
Kasaragod district administration has similarly announced a holiday for schools, colleges, professional colleges, Anganwadis, tuition centres, ICSE and CBSE schools, Kendriya Vidyalayas and religious educational institutions. Residential schools have been exempted from the order, while previously scheduled examinations and interviews will proceed without changes.
Kannur district has also declared a holiday for all educational institutions, including professional colleges, Anganwadis, tuition centres and religious educational institutions. Residential schools remain exempt.
Meanwhile, Orange Alerts have been issued for Malappuram and Wayanad districts, indicating the possibility of very heavy rainfall. Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant as rain intensity is expected to increase over the coming days.
In a separate precautionary measure, LKG and UKG classes at the Government LP School in Avittappilly, Thrissur district, have been declared closed on June 9 and 10 as the school is being used as a relief camp for families relocated from landslide-prone areas near Koddassery hill.
The ban on fishing along the Kerala coast is also expected to continue due to rough sea conditions and adverse weather forecasts.
