Ahmedabad: PM Narendra Modi officially inaugurated Maruti Suzuki’s state-of-the-art Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) manufacturing plant and lithium-ion battery production facility at Hansalpur in Gujarat today. This milestone marks Maruti Suzuki’s first EV production hub in India and positions the country as a key global manufacturing and export centre for electric vehicles. The facility will not only produce the e VITARA, Maruti Suzuki’s first global electric SUV, but also manufacture battery components needed for hybrid and electric vehicles.

The e VITARA is an all-electric compact SUV designed for both Indian and global markets. It comes with two battery options—a 49 kWh unit delivering 143 PS and 189 Nm torque, and a larger 61 kWh battery paired with a 174 PS motor. An all-wheel-drive version with a rear 65 PS motor producing a combined 184 PS and 300 Nm torque is also expected.
The SUV supports fast DC charging, achieving up to 80% battery capacity in around 50 minutes, and offers a driving range exceeding 500 km on the larger battery pack.
Dimensions and safety
Sporting a muscular build, the e VITARA measures 4275 mm in length, 1800 mm in width, and 1640 mm in height, with a 2700 mm wheelbase. It is equipped with advanced safety features, including seven airbags, Level 2 driver-assist systems, electronic stability control, collision mitigation, lane-keeping assist, and a tire pressure monitoring system.
Interior and technology
The e VITARA boasts a high-tech cabin featuring twin 10-inch floating displays, a premium Infinity by Harman sound system, wireless smartphone connectivity, and over 60 smart cloud-connected car features through Next-Gen Suzuki Connect. The spacious interior includes power-adjustable seating and multi-zone climate control, providing driver and passenger comfort.
Market launch
The company plans to launch the e VITARA in September 2025 with an estimated price range of ₹17 to 22.5 lakh INR. The model will compete globally, including in developed markets like Europe and Japan, signalling Maruti Suzuki’s strong push into electric mobility.
