A major step toward Amazon’s goal of net-zero carbon operations by 2040, complementing its existing 12,000+ EV fleet.

Amazon India announced plans Wednesday to deploy approximately 1,000 electric trucks, developed in partnership with Eicher Trucks and Buses, to support the nationwide operations of its delivery service, Amazon Now.
The initiative by the business division of VE Commercial Vehicles Limited (VECV) is projected to establish one of the largest dedicated electric truck fleets within India's e-commerce and quick-commerce industries, advancing Amazon's broader strategy to construct a more sustainable logistics network.
As part of the joint venture, VECV engineered the Eicher Pro-X small truck, a compact electric vehicle designed for high-frequency, intra-city transit. The vehicles are scheduled to transport merchandise between Amazon's primary fulfilment hubs, typically situated on urban outskirts, and the Amazon Now micro-fulfilment centres located closer to residential areas.
Amazon has already integrated roughly 50 of the vehicles into its operations and aims to expand the fleet to more than 1,000 electric trucks by 2028. In daily service, the trucks are projected to travel between 100 and 180 kilometres while executing multiple trips between corporate facilities, utilising a fast-charging duration of approximately 50 minutes.
The fleet will initially roll out across major metropolitan areas, beginning with the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR), Bengaluru, and Mumbai. The deployment is designed to support the rapid scaling of Amazon Now, which provides rapid delivery of everyday essentials—ranging from groceries and personal care products to electronic components and seasonal festive supplies.
The e-commerce company recently disclosed separate blueprints to expand the Amazon Now service to 100 cities across India while increasing its network to more than 1,000 micro-fulfilment centres. The expansion will introduce ultra-fast delivery options to municipal markets, including Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Jaipur, Lucknow, Kochi, Mangalore, and Vizag.
Corporate Perspectives on Fleet Electrification
Abhinav Singh, Vice President of Operations for Amazon India and Australia, emphasised the company's historical focus on environmental sustainability.
“We have always focused on making our operations more sustainable and have steadily expanded our electric mobility efforts, with over 12,000 EVs already deployed across India,” Singh said. “We work closely with multiple OEM partners to build solutions suited to our needs, and are integrating electric transportation more deeply as we grow. The planned deployment of ~1,000 purpose-built Volvo Eicher electric trucks is yet another step in that direction.”
S.S. Gill, Chief Commercial Officer for VECV, described the integration of the Eicher Pro X electric trucks as a major advancement in the manufacturer's dedication to sustainable logistics.
“The deployment of Eicher Pro X electric trucks marks a significant step forward in our commitment to sustainable mobility,” Gill stated. “What makes this even more meaningful is that the electric small truck from Eicher has been co-created in close collaboration with Amazon, with a sharp focus on addressing their specific operational needs for e-commerce and quick commerce operations. This partnership-led approach ensures that we are not only delivering electric vehicles, but also enabling efficient, reliable, and scalable logistics solutions.”
Historical Collaborations and Broader Green Initiatives
Amazon and VECV have collaborated since 2022 to engineer electric transport vehicles optimised for the Indian e-commerce landscape. In 2025, Amazon deployed more than 100 electric trucks sourced from various automotive manufacturers across cities, including Delhi-NCR, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Kolkata, as part of a comprehensive strategy to lower transportation emissions while enhancing delivery velocity.
As an early adopter of electric mobility frameworks in India, Amazon has introduced more than 12,500 electric vehicles across over 500 municipalities, partnering with a diverse group of manufacturers to electrify both mid-mile and last-mile shipping operations.
Beyond transportation, Amazon has implemented several sustainability programs across India, managing roughly 53 wind and solar utility installations that generate more than 1.1 gigawatts of renewable energy. The enterprise is also working toward a 2027 goal of replenishing more water to local communities than it consumes, noting that its clean water and sanitation investments have aided more than 1 million people since 2020.
Additionally, more than half of the customer orders processed through its fulfilment network are dispatched with minimal or no supplemental transport packaging. These collective adjustments are structured to satisfy the company's Climate Pledge commitment to achieve net-zero carbon operations by 2040.
Under the framework of The Climate Pledge, which Amazon co-founded, an initiative named Laneshift conducted pilot testing of electric trucks along the cargo corridor connecting Bengaluru and Chennai. Executed in partnership with C40 Cities, the program produced India's initial data-backed framework for transitioning long-haul commercial freight toward zero-tailpipe-emission battery-electric vehicles.
