Apple is expected to unveil iOS 26 alongside the launch of the iPhone 17 series at its much-anticipated “Awe Dropping” event on September 9, 2025. Following the event, the stable public release of iOS 26 is expected between September 15 and 16, continuing Apple's pattern of rolling out major iOS updates shortly after its fall iPhone announcements.

Key features and updates in iOS 26

iOS 26 introduces a visually striking redesign dubbed "Liquid Glass," which enhances the system with depth, transparency, and smooth motion, providing a fresh and expressive interface. The update also centres on powerful new Apple Intelligence capabilities—Apple’s generative AI framework, which brings smarter writing assistance, context-aware Siri improvements, on-device image generation, and personalised notifications.

Other important new features include:

  • Phone app overhaul: A combined Recents, Voicemails, and Favourites screen with live call screening and transcription for unknown callers.
  • Live translation: Breaks language barriers on phone calls and FaceTime.
  • Enhanced Messages app: Adds group polls for improved social interaction.
  • Improved privacy: Spam text filtering and on-device communication safety features.
  • Revamped Photos app: Easier photo browsing with Library and Collections tabs.
  • Customizable Lock screen: New clock styles, 3D wallpapers, and Focus mode enhancements.
  • Seamless cross-device continuity: Smoother experience across iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Compatible devices

iOS 26 supports all iPhones with A13 Bionic chips and newer, including:

  • iPhone 11 series, SE 2nd & 3rd Gen,
  • iPhone 12, 13, 14, and 15 series,
  • All iPhone 16 series and the upcoming iPhone 17 series.

Devices like the iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max are no longer supported but will receive security updates under iOS 18.

Download and installation

The update will be free for compatible devices and is expected to be about 15 GB in size. Users need a Wi-Fi connection, sufficient free storage (around 4-6 GB), and at least 50% battery to install the update safely. Once iOS 26 is publicly released, it can be downloaded via:

  • Settings > General > Software Update.

Beta testing and developer access

iOS 26 developer beta has been available since June 2025, with public beta versions rolling out from July. Developers can submit apps optimised for iOS 26 starting September 8, ahead of the public release.
