Apple is planning to bring full 5G satellite internet to its upcoming iPhone 18 series, potentially giving users complete internet access even in areas without cellular coverage, according to a new report.

Currently, Apple provides Emergency SOS via satellite for iPhone 14 and later models, enabling users to seek help even when they are off the grid with no cellular network coverage.

However, the existing satellite features are limited to Emergency SOS, Find My, Messages, and Roadside Assistance. According to a report by The Information, Apple is now working on full 5G satellite internet support for the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the first foldable iPhone.

"Apple plans to add support in upcoming iPhones as early as next year for 5G networks that aren't tethered to Earth's surface, which includes satellites…That would give the iPhone full internet access over satellite," the report noted.

How satellite connectivity works on iPhone

Satellite connections differ from regular mobile networks because satellites move quickly, have limited bandwidth, and orbit hundreds of miles above Earth. As a result, sending or receiving messages via satellite takes longer than using mobile or Wi-Fi networks.

Under ideal conditions with a clear view of the sky and horizon, a message may take around 30 seconds to send. In areas with light or medium foliage, it could take over a minute. Heavy foliage or significant obstructions may prevent your iPhone from connecting to a satellite altogether. Connection times can also be influenced by your surroundings, message length, and the availability of the satellite network.

To use satellite connectivity, your iPhone must have compatible software. Before heading to locations without mobile or Wi-Fi coverage, ensure your device is updated to the latest version of iOS. Apple includes satellite features free for two years with the activation of iPhone 14 or later models.

Connecting to a satellite with your iPhone

With iPhone 14 or later, you can connect your device to a satellite to text emergency services, request roadside assistance, message friends and family, and share your location—all while off the grid, without mobile or Wi-Fi coverage.
