Apple is said to be nearing a critical stage in the development of its long-rumoured foldable iPhone, with internal testing reportedly underway ahead of a possible September unveiling.

According to leaks from analyst Jeff Pu of GF Securities and tipster Digital Chat Station, Apple is preparing a dual-track launch strategy that could see its first foldable debut alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup.

The foldable device, tentatively referred to as the iPhone Fold, is expected to feature a 7.8-inch internal OLED display and a 5.3-inch cover screen. The design is described as book-style, prioritising ergonomics over ultra-narrow form factors seen in earlier foldable phones. Reports suggest Apple is aiming for a near crease-less experience by using Ultra-Thin Flexible Glass with variable thickness and a liquid metal hinge mechanism.

To accommodate the complex foldable structure, Apple is reportedly opting for Touch ID integrated into the power button instead of Face ID. The foldable is also said to feature a titanium body, dual rear cameras and hole-punch selfie cameras on both the inner and outer displays. The device may measure around 5.5 mm in thickness when unfolded and could be priced at approximately $2,400.

At the same time, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to undergo a significant visual overhaul. The Pro models, tipped to feature 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays respectively, may introduce under-display Face ID, allowing Apple to shrink the Dynamic Island to a small punch-hole housing the front camera.

Camera upgrades are also expected across the Pro range, with reports pointing to a triple 48MP rear camera system. The highlight is said to be a main sensor with a variable aperture, offering more precise control over light intake, similar to professional cameras.

Powering the premium lineup, including the foldable, is Apple’s upcoming A20 Pro chip. Built on TSMC’s 2nm process, the chip is expected to integrate 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM directly on the wafer, supporting advanced on-device Apple Intelligence features and improved performance efficiency.

Reports also suggest Apple may delay the standard iPhone 18 models as part of a split-launch strategy. If confirmed, the introduction of a foldable iPhone and under-display biometric technology would mark Apple’s most significant iPhone redesign since the launch of the iPhone X.
