Apple's next major iPhone software update is almost here, with iOS 27 expected to introduce powerful AI features, a redesigned Siri and several productivity-focused upgrades.

Apple is expected to unveil iOS 27 at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 8, with the update tipped to deliver the biggest Siri overhaul in years, deeper AI integration across apps and a redesigned iPhone experience.
The event is also expected to be a significant moment for CEO Tim Cook as speculation grows around the company's next chapter in artificial intelligence.

Apple prepares for one of its biggest software launches in years
Apple's annual WWDC event has traditionally served as the company's stage for unveiling the future of its software ecosystem. This year's conference is expected to be particularly significant as Apple seeks to accelerate its AI ambitions and compete more directly with rivals that have already integrated generative AI into their products.
At the centre of expectations is iOS 27, which is widely tipped to introduce a new generation of Siri powered by advanced AI models and deeper integration across Apple's ecosystem.
The update could mark the culmination of plans first outlined in 2024, when Apple promised a more intelligent and personalised voice assistant.
Siri expected to receive its biggest upgrade yet
The most anticipated announcement is a complete overhaul of Siri.
Reports suggest the assistant will gain a new visual identity, enhanced animations and tighter integration with the iPhone interface. Siri may also move into the Dynamic Island, offering a more interactive experience when users ask questions or issue commands.
More importantly, Siri is expected to become significantly more capable. Instead of simply responding to commands, the assistant could understand context across apps such as Messages, Mail, Notes and Calendar, allowing it to provide more personalised and relevant responses.
The upgraded Siri is also expected to perform more complex actions on behalf of users, bringing Apple closer to the emerging era of AI-powered digital assistants.
Apple enters the AI race more aggressively
Perhaps the biggest strategic shift is Apple's expected embrace of external AI models.
Reports suggest Apple may rely on advanced AI technology from Google for certain Siri capabilities, while also introducing a framework that allows users to connect third-party AI assistants.
If confirmed, the move would represent a major evolution in Apple's approach to artificial intelligence, opening the door to AI-powered experiences beyond Apple's own technology stack.
A standalone chatbot-style Siri application is also rumoured to be in development, potentially allowing users to upload files, analyse images and continue conversations in a way similar to popular AI chatbots.
Photos app could gain powerful AI editing tools
Artificial intelligence is also expected to play a larger role in the Photos app.
Leaks suggest Apple is testing features that can automatically expand images beyond their original frame, improve lighting and colour balance, and even alter image composition using AI-generated enhancements.
Another feature reportedly under development would allow users to edit photos through natural-language instructions, making image editing significantly more accessible.
These additions would bring Apple's photo-editing capabilities closer to those already available on competing AI-powered platforms.
Camera app may become smarter and more useful
Apple is also expected to redesign parts of the Camera app with AI at its core.
Visual Intelligence features could allow users to point their camera at objects and ask questions about what they see. The system may also analyse food packaging, extract nutritional information and transfer that data directly into health-related applications.
Another rumoured feature could automatically scan business cards, flyers and printed documents, extracting contact information and saving it directly to the phone.
Apple is also reportedly experimenting with a more customisable camera interface that would allow users to rearrange controls according to their preferences.
Creating shortcuts could become much easier
One of the most practical AI upgrades may arrive in the Shortcuts app.
Rather than manually building automation workflows, users could simply describe what they want Siri to do in everyday language. The AI system would then automatically create the shortcut.
If successful, this feature could make one of Apple's most powerful productivity tools accessible to a much wider audience.
Which iPhones are expected to support iOS 27?
Current reports suggest iOS 27 will be available on devices released after the iPhone 11 generation.
Expected compatible devices include:
- iPhone 12 series
- iPhone 13 series
- iPhone 14 series
- iPhone 15 series
- iPhone 16 series
- iPhone 17 series
- iPhone SE (3rd generation)
The first developer beta is expected immediately after the WWDC keynote, followed by a public beta in July and a wider release alongside the next generation of iPhones later this year.
Why WWDC 2026 matters
This year's WWDC is about more than a software update. It is expected to reveal how Apple intends to compete in an industry increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence.
For years, Apple prioritised privacy, hardware integration and on-device intelligence. Now, with competitors rapidly advancing AI capabilities, iOS 27 could signal the company's most ambitious attempt yet to redefine the iPhone experience for the AI era.
