New Delhi: The Punjab Kings orchestrated the highest successful run chase in the history of T20 cricket on Saturday, eclipsing a massive target of 265 to defeat the Delhi Capitals with seven deliveries remaining.

The historic victory was propelled by a relentless opening partnership between Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya, who amassed 116 runs during the power play. Their performance marked the second-highest score ever recorded in the first six overs of an IPL match, effectively lowering the required run rate from an initial 13.25 to a manageable 10.50.

Critique of Delhi’s Bowling Strategy

Appearing on ESPNcricinfo’s TimeOut, former West Indies captain Carlos Brathwaite criticised the Delhi Capitals for a lack of defensive proactivity. He noted that DC captain Axar Patel relied heavily on Auqib Nabi and Mukesh Kumar for four of the initial five overs; the pair surrendered 87 runs at a combined economy rate of 21.75.

"When you bat and score 200-and-a-lot, you don't need to be necessarily defensive but have a mindset that 'this can be scored,'" Brathwaite remarked. He suggested that premier bowlers like T Natarajan and Kuldeep Yadav should have been utilised much earlier to pressure the opposition.

"I saw Natarajan bowl just one over in the power play. They could have been a little bit more proactive," Brathwaite said. "Get Kuldeep on [early]. He may not get a wicket, but he may stem the flow of runs for an over. If Natarajan and Kuldeep had bowled three out of the [first] six [overs], and PBKS had scored 65 in the powerplay, PBKS would have so much more to do."

The Impact on the Middle Order

Brathwaite argued that the explosive start relieved pressure on the following batsmen, particularly Shreyas Iyer. After the openers were dismissed in consecutive overs, Iyer was able to stabilise the innings with an unbeaten 71 off 36 balls.

"They did so much in the powerplay that when Shreyas came in, he could be eight off his first eight balls," Brathwaite explained. "[That would] never [be] possible if you need to score 19 or 20 per over. I think DC could have structured their game a little bit better."

Praise for Technical Precision

Former Indian cricketer Deep Dasgupta highlighted the technical proficiency of the Punjab openers, noting that their success came from traditional mechanics rather than reckless swinging. Prabhsimran contributed 76 runs off 26 deliveries, while Arya added 43 off 17.

"Would you call that hitting? They were playing normal cricket shots," Dasgupta observed. "The beauty about that opening pair was about how easy they made it look."

Brathwaite further analysed Prabhsimran’s tactical maturity, noting his ability to anticipate a bowler’s adjustments. "As soon as he hits a good shot, he is ahead of the ball. He knows that the next ball that is coming is going to be a slower ball," Brathwaite said. "He is able to play from the crease, he has the ability to charge, he can walk across and use the pace, or he can tonk you back over the head."
