Iran has suffered heavy casualties after a major assault by the United States and Israel, with reports claiming at least 201 killed and hundreds injured across 24 provinces. Smoke rose over Tehran and other cities as rescue teams scrambled to aid survivors.

Iranian NGO Red Crescent Society said that 201 people have died and 747 injured following strikes across multiple provinces. Over 220 Red Crescent teams are actively engaged in rescue operations at affected sites.

Reports indicate that some of the earliest attacks targeted areas near the offices of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. It remains unclear whether the 86-year-old leader was present during the strikes. Iranian media said explosions were reported nationwide, with visible smoke over the capital.

Targeted locations and casualties

Iranian state media said at least 15 people were killed in the country’s southwest, where strikes hit four locations including a sports hall, two residential areas, and a hall near a school. Officials warned that casualties are expected to rise.

Israeli air offensive

Israel’s military said approximately 200 fighter jets took part in the initial attack, striking nearly 500 targets including air defences and missile launchers. The operation was described as the largest military flyover in the Israeli air force’s history.

Witnesses near Tehran’s Intelligence Ministry reported multiple explosions and the activation of air defence systems. Iranian media have yet to issue an official statement regarding the incidents.

Regional retaliation

In response, Iran launched missiles and drones targeting Israel and U.S. military bases in the region. U.S. President Donald Trump urged Iranians to rise against the Islamic leadership that has governed since 1979.
