US embassies in several West Asian countries on Saturday urged American citizens to consider leaving the region or be prepared to depart if the security situation worsens, citing heightened tensions with Iran and the possibility of further escalation.

The embassies, including the US Embassy in Jerusalem, issued identical security alerts advising Americans to exercise increased caution while travelling to or within West Asia. The advisory described the regional security environment as "complex" and warned that the situation could change rapidly.

The warning comes as US President Donald Trump threatened additional military action against Iran. Speaking at Camp David on Friday, Trump said the United States would continue striking Iran "very hard" until it "can't take it anymore."

The latest advisory follows a period of hostilities between the two countries, with the US carrying out attacks on Iran and Tehran targeting ships in the Strait of Hormuz as well as American assets in the region.

Calling the Iranian regime "unpredictable", the security alert warned of the "potential for unforeseen escalation" and advised Americans in the Middle East to remain vigilant.

"Americans currently in the Middle East should exercise caution and heightened vigilance and should be prepared for flight cancellations, periodic airspace closures, and potential travel disruptions," the advisory said.

It also noted that while some airlines have delayed the resumption of normal flight schedules, others have cancelled routes in the region. Americans were advised to consider departing or be prepared to leave if tensions intensify further.

For those planning to travel to West Asia, the embassies urged them to "seriously reconsider" their plans. Travellers who choose to visit the region were advised to closely monitor updates from airlines and airports for any disruptions.

The advisory also warned that US diplomatic facilities have previously been targeted and said Iran and groups aligned with Tehran could target American interests overseas, including US businesses and institutions.

"The situation in the Middle East remains fluid. The Iranian regime is unpredictable, as seen by its recent decisions to attack areas in the region without warning or provocations as well as to expand attacks to areas not previously targeted (such as Egypt)," the alert said.

It added that Americans should remain vigilant regardless of whether US interests in a particular country have been targeted in the past.

The US State Department had authorised the departure of non-emergency government personnel and eligible family members from the US mission in Israel in February, a day before the United States launched a joint offensive with Israel on Iran.

Despite the security concerns, the US Embassy in Jerusalem and its branch office in Tel Aviv have continued to keep their consular sections open for both routine and emergency services.
