Washington: US President Donald Trump said on Friday that he was "losing faith" in Iran, accusing Tehran of repeatedly breaking its commitments even as diplomatic talks between the two countries continue.

Speaking during a televised Cabinet meeting at Camp David, Trump questioned Iran's credibility, claiming its leaders had consistently failed to honour their promises.

"They do lie, and they do misrepresent," Trump said. "They always want to talk, but they break their word so often."

Despite his criticism, Trump said senior US officials remained engaged in discussions with Iranian counterparts. He named Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, Senior Adviser Jared Kushner, Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as members of the American negotiating team.

"We have great people talking," Trump said.

Referring to regional tensions, Trump said an attack on a US military base in Jordan took place while diplomatic efforts were ongoing.

"Instead, I got a call from Pete that they just shot five missiles at one of our bases in Jordan," Trump said, referring to US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.

When asked whether he expected further attacks, Trump said he could not rule out the possibility.

"I think I'm going to be foolish to say no. You always have to keep your guard up," he said.

Commenting on Iran's long-term position, Trump suggested the country's ability to sustain its current approach would diminish over time.

"They get weaker. They get a little stronger, maybe now, but they'll get weaker, and then they peter out," he said.
