The shutdown, now approaching a month, has left air traffic controllers working without pay. Many are calling in sick, taking second jobs to make ends meet, or working mandatory overtime six days a week

Washington: US President Donald Trump on Monday issued a forceful directive demanding that all air traffic controllers return to work immediately, despite not being paid during the ongoing federal government shutdown, threatening penalties for those who fail to comply.
“All Air Traffic Controllers must get back to work, NOW!!! Anyone who doesn't will be substantially 'docked,'” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, emphasising the urgency as hundreds of flights across the United States faced cancellations this weekend.
The shutdown, now approaching a month, has left air traffic controllers working without pay. Many are calling in sick, taking second jobs to make ends meet, or working mandatory overtime six days a week. Staffing shortages have forced airlines to reduce flight schedules to ensure safety and maintain operational efficiency, with over 1,000 flights cancelled on the first day of the Federal Aviation Administration’s slowdown, including more than 700 on Saturday—a typically less busy day.
The FAA has said that 4% of flights at 40 targeted airports have been affected, with the possibility of rising to 10% over the coming week if the shutdown continues. While most passengers have been rebooked and able to travel, uncertainty over cancellations has left travellers anxious, prompting some to rent cars, change plans, or cancel trips altogether, particularly as the Thanksgiving holiday approaches.
Nick Daniels, president of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, called for an immediate end to the record-long shutdown, warning of mounting risks as safety-critical employees continue to work without pay. “Enough is enough,” Daniels said, describing a tentative congressional deal as a “step in the right direction.”
Analysts warn that prolonged disruptions could extend beyond air travel, affecting freight, tourism, and the broader economy, underlining the high stakes of the standoff between the federal government and its essential workforce.
Trump’s demand intensifies pressure on both lawmakers and employees, highlighting the clash between operational safety and political brinkmanship as millions of Americans face potential travel disruptions in the busy holiday season.
