A passenger aircraft carrying 55 people overran the runway during an emergency landing at Mogadishu’s Aden Abdulle International Airport on Tuesday and came to rest in shallow water near the beach, officials confirmed.

The flight, operated by Starsky Aviation, had taken off for the northern city of Gaalkacyo when it developed a technical problem shortly after departure. About 15 minutes into the journey, the crew decided to return to Mogadishu.

During the landing attempt, the aircraft veered off the runway and slid toward the shoreline of the Indian Ocean, airline CEO Ahmed Nur said.

“The aircraft overran on the runway" and stopped near the beach. There were no injuries or fatalities Nur said in a statement, adding that all 50 passengers and five crew members were safely evacuated.

Somalia’s Transport Minister Mohamed Farah Nuh confirmed that emergency teams accounted for everyone onboard and that only the aircraft sustained damage. Authorities said the cause of the incident will be investigated.

Videos and images of the aircraft near the waterline quickly spread on social media, drawing attention to the dramatic but injury-free landing.
