Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that Russia will do what it can to support Iran’s interests and contribute to efforts aimed at restoring peace in West Asia, during a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in St Petersburg.

The meeting comes at a time of heightened regional tensions, with Iran engaged in multiple diplomatic engagements across West Asia and beyond.

Russia-Iran coordination

According to Iranian state media, Putin conveyed that Moscow remains committed to supporting Iran as well as other regional countries in promoting stability and peace.

He also expressed hope that the Iranian people would overcome the current difficult situation and that peace in the region would be restored as soon as possible.

Putin further noted that Russia and Iran maintain close consultations on regional and international developments and emphasised continued cooperation between the two countries.

Araghchi’s diplomatic tour

Araghchi is currently on a multi-country diplomatic tour that includes visits to Pakistan, Oman and Russia, as part of broader efforts to coordinate positions on ongoing regional tensions.

Upon arriving in Russia, he said that Iran and Russia have consistently maintained close consultations on a wide range of regional and international issues.

He added that recent circumstances had created a gap in high-level meetings, which is now being addressed through renewed diplomatic engagement.

During his visit, Araghchi is expected to review the latest developments related to the regional conflict situation and align diplomatic positions with Moscow.

He is also scheduled to meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov for further discussions on bilateral and regional issues.

The talks highlight ongoing efforts by Tehran to strengthen coordination with key allies amid evolving geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
