Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif has drawn criticism for his remarks regarding India’s drone operations amid ongoing cross-border tensions.
In a video now widely circulated on social media, Asif is seen saying, “We didn't intercept Indian drones because we didn't want to reveal our locations.” The video has gone viral but has not been independently verified by HT.com.
The statement comes amid heightened tensions along the Line of Control (LoC), following India’s launch of Operation Sindoor and Pakistan’s subsequent retaliatory attacks. On May 8 and 9, the Indian Army reported that Pakistani forces had launched multiple drone and mortar strikes across the western border, which were successfully repelled.
A day prior to this statement, Asif also appeared in an interview with CNN where he was asked to substantiate Pakistan’s claim of having shot down five Indian fighter jets. When pressed for evidence, he cited posts circulating on Indian social media rather than presenting any official proof. The journalist conducting the interview rebuked this response, highlighting that social media content cannot replace official verification.
Meanwhile, the Indian Army confirmed it had shot down more than 50 Pakistani drones in a large-scale counter-operation on May 8. The drones were reportedly part of a coordinated breach attempt involving swarm technology. Indian officials said the country’s forces had also given a “befitting reply” to the ceasefire violations across multiple sectors in Jammu and Kashmir.
Asif’s comments have been met with scepticism and ridicule, with critics calling it a bizarre justification that reflects Pakistan’s lack of credible military response. The situation remains tense as both nations trade fire and propaganda in the wake of recent escalations.
