Beirut: Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam on Monday denounced a cross-border rocket attack by Hezbollah as "irresponsible," warning that such actions risk plunging the nation into a broader regional war.

The prime minister's rebuke followed a flurry of rockets and drones launched by the Iran-backed militant group into northern Israel, an act Hezbollah framed as a direct response to the recent killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and ongoing Israeli military operations.

Salam characterised the escalation as "an irresponsible and suspicious act that jeopardises Lebanon’s security and safety and provides Israel with pretexts to continue its aggression."

The Government’s Stance

In a statement posted to the social media platform X, Salam emphasised his administration's commitment to preventing the country from being drawn into the escalating conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran.

“We will not allow the country to be dragged into new adventures, and we will take all necessary measures to apprehend the perpetrators and protect the Lebanese people,” the prime minister said.

Earlier, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) responded to the rocket fire with "large-scale strikes" across Lebanon, targeting what it described as Hezbollah infrastructure and launch sites.
