Washington DC: The European Union has strongly condemned US sanctions imposed on five European figures involved in tech regulation, including former European Commissioner Thierry Breton, warning that it will respond decisively to protect its regulatory autonomy.

EU issues strong condemnation

In a statement on Wednesday, the European Commission said it had requested clarifications from US authorities and remained fully engaged. "If needed, we will respond swiftly and decisively to defend our regulatory autonomy against unjustified measures," the statement read.

Digital rules and fair play

The EU emphasised that its digital regulations aim to ensure a safe, fair, and level playing field for all companies, applied without discrimination. Officials reiterated that these rules are critical to maintaining fairness in the digital market.

The sanctions mark a rare escalation in EU-US tensions over tech policy and regulation. Analysts suggest that the EU could consider retaliatory measures to defend its regulatory sovereignty, signalling potential friction in transatlantic economic and digital cooperation.
