Dhaka: A Bangladesh court on Thursday sentenced ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina to a total of 21 years in prison after convicting her in three corruption cases relating to the allocation of residential plots in the Rajuk New Town Project at Purbachol, according to local media reports.

The state-run Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) reported that the cases were based on allegations that Hasina approved plot allocations in violation of official procedures. The court stated in its judgment that the plot awarded to Hasina had been issued “without any application and in a manner that exceeded the legally authorised jurisdiction”.

Hasina, who has been out of power and is yet to be arrested, was tried in absentia. The court handed down seven years of imprisonment for each of the three cases, amounting to a combined 21-year sentence.

The ruling marks a significant development in Bangladesh’s political landscape, where Hasina — who previously served multiple terms as prime minister — has been a central figure for decades. With the conviction delivered in her absence, authorities have yet to indicate when or if she will be taken into custody to serve the sentence.
