New Delhi: India on Wednesday said it is reviewing a request from Bangladesh to extradite former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and reaffirmed its commitment to the best interests of the Bangladeshi people.

Hasina, 78, was sentenced to death in absentia last week by a special tribunal in Dhaka for "crimes against humanity" concerning her government's violent crackdown on student-led protests last year. The Awami League leader has been living in India since fleeing Bangladesh on August 5 last year amid widespread demonstrations.

"The request is being examined as part of ongoing judicial and internal legal processes," External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said. He added, "We remain committed to the best interests of the people of Bangladesh, including peace, democracy, inclusion and stability in that country and will continue to engage constructively in this regard with all stakeholders."

The tribunal in Dhaka found Hasina culpable for ordering and inciting extrajudicial killings carried out by law enforcement during the protests that led to her government's downfall. Since August 2024, Hasina has lived in self-imposed exile.
