Have you thought of travelling by a plane, without any documents or papers to bog you down? Imagine, a few hours before your flight, your boarding pass is displayed right on your WhatsApp and that’s it. You can walk straight into the airport seamlessly, without fumbling through printouts or slips.

SpiceJet has taken a major step toward making this a reality. The airline has introduced a paperless boarding process at Shillong Airport, becoming the first Indian carrier to issue boarding passes directly via WhatsApp at airport check-in counters.

The move is aimed at cutting waiting times, reducing passenger inconvenience, and eliminating paper waste in aviation. With this new feature, passengers checking in at the counter will now receive their boarding passes digitally on WhatsApp—doing away with the need for printed slips.

The initiative reflects SpiceJet’s growing commitment to sustainability and digital innovation. According to government data, Indian airports still printed more than nine million boarding passes in June 2025 alone, generating an estimated six tonnes of carbon emissions. SpiceJet’s WhatsApp-based solution is designed to cut this avoidable impact.

At the heart of this process lies SpiceJet’s indigenously developed Web Departure Control System (WEBDCS). This browser-based platform allows airport staff to issue boarding passes via WhatsApp or email, and even send baggage tags through SMS. Importantly, it can run on tablets as well as standard airport check-in computers, making it highly adaptable.

Commenting on the development, GP Gupta, Chief Strategy Officer at SpiceJet, said: “At SpiceJet, we are constantly working to enhance the travel experience for our passengers while embracing sustainability. The introduction of paperless boarding at Shillong Airport is a significant step in that direction. We look forward to expanding this convenience-driven initiative across more airports in the near future.”

The airline now plans to gradually roll out the WhatsApp-based boarding system across more domestic airports, creating smoother travel experiences while strengthening its eco-conscious initiatives.
