What is driving gold prices?
Market attention is increasingly focused on the US Federal Reserve’s September policy decision. Expectations around interest rates can influence gold because changes in US yields and the dollar can affect demand for the precious metal.
Geopolitical developments are another important factor. Escalating tensions in the Middle East, including the worsening US-Iran situation, have added uncertainty to global markets.
Crude oil prices have also crossed the $100-per-barrel level, adding another factor for investors to monitor.
What investors should watch
The Federal Reserve’s upcoming policy decision remains a key near-term trigger for gold and silver. Investors will also be watching movements in the US dollar, crude oil prices, geopolitical tensions and domestic currency movements.
Gold and silver rates can vary between cities and sellers, while jewellery prices may also include making charges, taxes and other applicable costs. Buyers should therefore check the final price with the jeweller before making a purchase.
Analysis
The September 10 price movement reflects the competing forces currently affecting precious metals. Gold is being supported by geopolitical uncertainty, while expectations surrounding US monetary policy and movements in the dollar can create pressure on prices.
Silver has shown stronger domestic movement than gold in recent trading, although international silver prices declined during morning trade. The divergence highlights the importance of distinguishing between international prices, domestic futures and local retail rates.
With crude oil above $100 a barrel and US-Iran tensions adding uncertainty, further changes in currency and commodity markets could influence domestic gold and silver prices in the coming sessions.
