Large amount of gold remains undiscovered

Gold has fascinated people for centuries, and its demand remains particularly strong in India. But while gold is mined across the world, a significant amount is believed to remain undiscovered. Estimates vary widely depending on how “undiscovered” resources are defined, making it difficult to determine exactly how much gold is still hidden beneath the earth.

At the same time, the world already has a vast stock of gold in the form of jewellery, coins and bars. Much of this gold can be melted down and reused, making recycling an important source of supply. However, the purity of recycled gold can vary, particularly in the case of jewellery, which is often mixed with other metals to improve its strength and durability.

For India, the availability of above-ground gold and recycled supplies can help meet demand, although domestic prices continue to be influenced by international gold prices, currency movements, import costs and local demand.

How is gold used in electronics?

Gold is widely used in electronics because it is highly resistant to corrosion and tarnishing and conducts electricity reliably. These properties make it useful in components where stable electrical connections are important.

Gold can be found in connectors, switches, relays, contact points and other electronic components. Small quantities are also used in products such as mobile phones, calculators, GPS devices, computers and televisions.

Although the amount of gold in an individual electronic device is tiny, the enormous volume of electronic products manufactured and discarded globally means that the overall quantity can be significant. Gold can be recovered from electronic waste, but much of it is still not efficiently recycled.

The use of gold in electronics therefore contributes to industrial demand for the metal. However, compared with investment and jewellery demand, its impact on gold prices in India remains relatively limited.
