According to notifications issued by the Union Ministry of Finance, the export duty on petrol has been reduced from Rs 2.5 per litre to zero, while the levy on high-speed diesel has been raised from Rs 8.5 to Rs 11.5 per litre.

The government has also increased the export duty on aviation turbine fuel, commonly known as jet fuel, from Rs 10.5 to Rs 11 per litre.

The revised rates came into effect on Saturday, October 31, following the publication of the notifications in the Official Gazette.

Diesel export duty rises by Rs 3 per litre

The latest revision represents a Rs 3 per litre increase in the special additional excise duty on diesel exports, while the levy on aviation turbine fuel has been raised by 50 paise per litre.

Petrol exports, meanwhile, will no longer attract the additional duty, providing relief to exporters of the fuel.

The changes were notified by the Department of Revenue under the Ministry of Finance. The revision concerning aviation turbine fuel was issued through Notification No. 56/2026-Central Excise.

Why were fuel export duties introduced?

The Centre introduced export duties on petrol, diesel and aviation turbine fuel on March 27, 2026, against the backdrop of the West Asia crisis, which disrupted global energy markets and heightened concerns over petroleum supplies.

The measures were aimed at discouraging exports and ensuring adequate availability of petroleum products in the domestic market.

With international crude oil prices and supply conditions remaining volatile, the government has been periodically adjusting the levies to reflect changing market conditions.

The export duties are reviewed every fortnight, based on average international prices of crude oil, petrol, diesel and aviation turbine fuel during the period since the previous review.

How have the export duties changed?

The latest revision follows several adjustments to petroleum export duties since their introduction in March.

Under the previous revision, which took effect on October 16, the special additional excise duty on petrol exports was fixed at Rs 2.5 per litre, diesel at Rs 8.5 per litre and aviation turbine fuel at Rs 10.5 per litre.

The October 31 revision eliminates the petrol export levy while increasing the duties on diesel and jet fuel.
