India’s gold demand, import duties and investment trends

India’s gold demand has remained subdued in recent years, according to the World Gold Council, although the country has continued to rank among the world’s largest gold consumers, at times overtaking China. Jewellery purchases remain an important driver of demand, even as alternatives such as gold ETFs and e-gold offer investors ways to gain exposure without buying physical gold.

The government has also used import duties to discourage gold purchases from overseas and contain the current account deficit. Although gold prices have delivered substantial returns since the 2008 global financial crisis, the market has experienced periods of weaker performance. Future price movements remain uncertain, and investors may need to weigh market conditions and their investment goals before making fresh commitments to the metal.
