New Delhi: India’s aviation sector took a significant leap forward on Tuesday as the Adani Group and Brazilian aerospace major Embraer SA announced a strategic partnership to create a regional transport aircraft venture in India.

The collaboration will span manufacturing, assembly, and increased localisation efforts, marking the Adani Group’s first major entry into aircraft production.

The Memorandum of Understanding was formalised in New Delhi, where senior officials from both Adani Defence & Aerospace and Embraer signed the pact in the presence of government representatives.

The partnership goes beyond simply assembling aircraft on Indian soil — it emphasises progressive technology transfer and building a robust domestic aerospace supply chain. Civil Aviation Secretary Samir Kumar Sinha said this approach could position India as a trusted global manufacturing hub for regional jets.

Under the agreement, the venture will focus on Embraer’s regional transport jets, aircraft typically seating up to 150 passengers. These jets are widely used on short- and medium-haul routes and are well suited to expanding domestic and regional air travel demand.

The initiative aligns with India’s broader “Make in India” push to develop domestic capabilities in high-technology sectors and support the country’s rapidly growing civil aviation market.

Industry observers say that establishing a final assembly line for commercial aircraft could catalyse local job creation, spur allied manufacturing, and reduce reliance on imports.

Officials have also indicated that the new venture might, over time, expand into component production, further deepening technology transfer and fostering skilled aerospace manufacturing capabilities within India.

With India projected to be one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets, carriers and industry players are expected to benefit from closer access to competitively manufactured regional aircraft.

The timeline for the assembly line’s first deliveries and the exact choice of the manufacturing site — with Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh emerging as contenders — are still being finalised, but the announcement has already stirred significant industry attention.
