Veteran actor Anant Nag has been chosen for the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2024, the country's highest recognition for an individual contribution to Indian cinema. 

The announcement was made on Wednesday, September 16. Nag will receive the prestigious honour at the 72nd National Film Awards ceremony in Kevadia, Gujarat, on September 22.

The award recognises Nag's extensive contribution to Indian cinema during a career that has lasted more than five decades.

One of the most prominent names in Kannada cinema, the actor has also worked in Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, Tamil and Marathi films.

Born on September 4, 1948, Nag began his career in theatre before entering films.

He made his debut as a lead actor in the Kannada film 'Sankalp'. He later ventured into Hindi cinema with 'Ankur', directed by Shyam Benegal.

Over the course of his career, Nag has appeared in more than 300 films and has portrayed characters across a wide range of genres.

His work has extended beyond cinema as well, with his performance in the popular television series 'Malgudi Days' introducing him to a wider audience.

His career has earned him several honours, including five Karnataka State Best Actor Awards and five Filmfare Awards, according to the Government of India's profile on the actor.

The Dadasaheb Phalke Award adds to a series of major national recognitions for Nag. In 2025, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan for his contribution to the field of art.

The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is presented annually as part of the National Film Awards to recognise an individual's outstanding contribution to Indian cinema.

The award is named after Dhundiraj Govind Phalke, widely regarded as the father of Indian cinema.

Nag's selection also marks another significant milestone in a career that has seen him work across multiple film industries and generations of Indian audiences.

The 72nd National Film Awards ceremony will honour achievements in Indian cinema for 2024.

Nag's Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the same year will be presented during the ceremony on September 22.
