Thrissur: Writers and cultural activists have expressed disapproval over the appearance of an advertisement logo celebrating the second anniversary of Kerala government on the recent books published by the Kerala Sahitya Akademi. The logo, which appeared on the top right corner of the books, carried the tagline ‘Kaikal Korthu Karuthode, Randam Pinarayi Sarkar Varshikam’ (Joining hands with strength, Second Pinarayi Government Anniversary).

As the issue sparked a controversy, Akademi secretary cum editor CP Aboobacker took responsibility and shared on social media that he had directed to place the logo on the books. He claimed that the logo was added as the books were published as part of the government’s 100-day programme.

However, Akademi chairman K Satchidanandan expressed displeasure of the act and asserted that the Akademi had the responsibility to remain cautious on such matters as governments tend to fall, whereas books remain. He added that if necessary, then the logo could have been placed on the second pages of the books.

The advertisement logo of the government has been published on the cover page of 30 books including ‘Malayala Nataka Sahithya Charithram’, Dr M Leelavathi’s ‘ONV Kavitha Padanangal’ among others. Objections about the logo were rife even before the publishing as the move was likely to adversely affect the book sales.

Even leftists have slammed the usage of ‘Pinarayi Government’ on the logo, instead of Kerala Government’ alleging that the move was aimed at promoting personal worship.
