Kozhikode: Wayanad’s tourism industry is reeling from the impact of the recent landslide disasters. Despite normal conditions in most areas, the disaster has deterred tourists, leading to massive financial losses for the region.

In the 22 days following the disaster, tourism businesses have suffered losses exceeding Rs 20 crores. K. R. Vanjeeswaran, President of the Wayanad Tourism Organisation, reported a loss of at least Rs 3 crores due to booking cancellations. Even with the rainy season, resorts and hotels had around 40 percent occupancy, with some even reaching up to 90 percent. However, most of these bookings have been cancelled.

Many potential visitors are staying away, fearing for their safety, even though only two wards in Meppadi Panchayat were affected. This fear, amplified by the scale of the disaster, has severely impacted the tourism sector.

Murali Manakkal, Managing Director of Vythiri Mist, noted a personal loss of Rs 28 lakhs due to booking cancellations. Despite having 90 percent of bookings, most were cancelled after guests expressed concerns about Wayanad’s safety. This situation has also halted income for local workers.

Wayanad, which boasts around 4,000 accommodation units including resorts and homestays, relies heavily on tourism, which accounts for 22 percent of its revenue. Local vendors and small businesses near tourist spots are also struggling. Shailesh, Secretary of the Wayanad Tourism Organization, said that while establishments like handcraft are opening, there are no visitors coming in.

Taxi drivers, who usually earn at least Rs 8,000 rupees every three days from tourist traffic, are now seeing no income. Sathish Babu, owner of Vishnu Travels, reported that his vehicles return daily without generating any revenue. Owners are also struggling to keep up with loan repayments. Jeep owners providing off-road services are also out of work.

Although tourist attractions like Pookode Lake and Karapuzha Dam are open, it will take time for the area to recover fully. The District Tourism Promotion Council has launched efforts and campaigns to reassure tourists and restore confidence in the safety of Wayanad.
