Malappuram: A 13-year-old boy died at Kuttipuram Taluk Hospital here on Thursday due to health complications that developed after being infected with the H1N1 virus (commonly known as swine flu).

The deceased has been identified as Gokul, a native of Kuttipuram. Officials confirmed that the boy tested positive for the infection.

H1N1-related death comes at a time when the district has been witnessing a surge in dengue and leptospirosis cases, like other parts of the state. This also comes at a time when the state is witnessing spur in fever cases. According to reports, Malappuram has the highest number of individuals reaching hospitals for fever.

In the last three weeks, Kerala witnessed 37 fever-related deaths. Of this, 21 succumbed to dengue.

What is H1N1 or swine flu?

H1N1 is caused by the virus in Influenza A group. It is a flu virus strain that can spread mainly from pigs to humans through air. Hence, those who have close interactions with pigs are more exposed to the flu.  While sneezing and coughing, the virus can spread to at least one metre from the patient, which can spread the disease to others also.

Symptoms
The major symptoms are fever, body pain, dry cough, diarrhoea and fatigue. Though the fever will be relieved within 4 to 5 days, the flu may turn severe in certain cases. Therefore, diagnosing and seeking medical aid is crucial in the case of H1N1 flu. In severe cases, the disease may lead to infection in brain or lungs along with intensifying symptoms.

Precautions
Wear masks properly
Avoid spitting in public places
Avoid close interactions with people who display symptoms
Wash hands with soap and water once you arrive home
Seek immediate health care once identified with symptoms
