Kochi: With schools closed for the summer holidays, children have begun enjoying their vacation season. While every parent hopes for a joyful and memorable break, the period can sometimes turn tragic due to preventable accidents.

Authorities have cautioned that the months of April and May often witness a spike in road accidents and drowning incidents, dampening not just family happiness but also affecting entire communities. The Motor Vehicles Department has stressed that increased awareness and basic precautions can significantly reduce such risks.

In a recent social media advisory, the department shared a set of simple yet crucial safety guidelines for parents and travellers:

  • Let children play freely, but ensure they stay away from roads and roadside areas.
  • Do not allow underage children to drive vehicles under any circumstances.
  • Avoid long-distance travel on motorcycles, especially in groups.
  • Plan leisure trips in advance with proper route mapping and adequate time.
  • If travelling in private vehicles, avoid driving between 11 pm and 5 am where possible. If unavoidable, ensure experienced drivers are at the wheel and well-rested.
  • When using taxis or contract carriages, confirm that drivers have had sufficient rest.
  • Always wear safety gear such as seat belts and helmets.
  • Ensure vehicles are properly maintained and serviced.
  • Check that all lights are functioning correctly and use headlights responsibly, including dimming when required.
  • Avoid any passenger behaviour that could distract the driver.
  • Do not exceed the vehicle’s seating capacity under any circumstances.

Officials emphasised that following these straightforward measures can help ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday season for children and families alike.
