Thiruvananthapuram: In the Sharon murder case, the first accused, Greeshma, has been sentenced to death along with a fine of ₹2 lakh. The court has also sentenced her to 10 years of imprisonment and a fine of ₹1 lakh for abduction with intent to murder, and 5 years of imprisonment with a fine of ₹50,000 for misleading the investigation. Greeshma’s maternal uncle and the second accused, Nirmalakumaran Nair, has been sentenced to 3 years of imprisonment and fined ₹50,000.
The court observed that Greeshma executed a meticulously planned crime. As the sentence was announced, Sharon’s family broke down in tears inside the courtroom. They stood outside the court with folded hands, expressing their gratitude. The court rejected any leniency for Greeshma based on her age. This makes her the youngest convict in Kerala to receive the death penalty. The sentence was delivered by Neyyattinkara Additional Sessions Judge A M Basheer.
Earlier, the court had found Greeshma (24) guilty of the charges. The verdict comes two years after the heinous crime that left the state in shock. The court, however, acquitted Greeshma’s mother Sindhu on the benefit of doubt. Meanwhile, Nirmalakumaran Nair, was found guilty of destroying evidence.
According to the chargesheet, Greeshma invited her boyfriend, J P Sharon Raj (23), to her house at Muriyankara, where she poisoned him by mixing a pesticide into a herbal concoction. Sharon succumbed to the poisoning days later. The investigation revealed Greeshma’s motives were to eliminate Sharon, as his presence posed a hurdle to her family-arranged marriage with a soldier. Greeshma was found guilty of murder, conspiracy and tampering with evidence.
