The late-night rescue of a cat trapped on a Kochi Metro pillar has sparked widespread social media reactions, with many users calling it the “real Kerala story”

After the stranded cat ‘Subhash’ was rescued in Kochi in the early hours of February 22, videos of cheering crowds flooded social media platforms. Many users described the incident as an example of collective compassion and unity.
The operation, carried out by Fire and Rescue officials with support from Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL), included a brief suspension of metro services to facilitate the rescue. Visuals of people waiting late into the night and applauding when the cat was finally brought down became widely shared moments online.

Several posts highlighted how people from different backgrounds gathered near the site and celebrated together once the rescue was completed.
‘This will only happen in Kerala’
One widely circulated comment read in full: “I was leaving around 11 pm near this area yesterday as this rescue was going on. I saw the anticipation, the worry, and when I watched the joy after the rescue, I was thinking the same thought I had then — this will only happen in Kerala.”
Another user wrote: “How can people make propaganda and hatred just by ignoring all this love and goodness people carry? Why would you only choose the dark spot when there’s sun-bright light here?”
A separate post stated: “Life matters no matter how small it is. Ignoring lives and pain is never Kerala’s mindset. We have proven that during disasters repeatedly. We don’t need anyone’s certificate. We know the love and care we carry, and we will continue to do that.”
Another viral tweet described the scale of the effort: “They shut down an entire metro line to save one cat. At 1.30 am, firefighters finally brought him down. This is what survival looks like.”
Many users stressed that the willingness to halt services and mobilise resources for an animal reflected a broader humanitarian mindset. Several posts said the incident represented “the real Kerala story”.
References to films and wider narratives
A section of social media users directly referenced Hindi films such as The Kerala Story and discussions around a reported sequel, arguing that acts of compassion and solidarity often receive less attention than more controversial narratives.
Posts claimed that selective portrayals focusing on negative aspects create an incomplete picture of Kerala society. Some users questioned why moments of unity, such as the rescue, do not trend nationally with the same intensity as contentious debates.
The upcoming Hindi film The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond has generated significant debate ahead of its scheduled release in February 2026. The sequel extends themes from The Kerala Story and has drawn criticism from sections of filmmakers, political leaders, and civil society groups, who argue that it portrays Kerala in a negative or exaggerated manner. Reports indicate that petitions have been filed in the Kerala High Court challenging aspects of the film’s certification and content, while public discourse on social media remains sharply divided between those defending it as creative expression and those alleging that it promotes a controversial narrative. The trailer release intensified the debate, with discussions focusing on representation, selective censoring of movies and the broader political context surrounding the film.
Humanity as the central theme
Across platforms including X, Instagram, and Facebook, the dominant tone remained celebratory. Users described the rescue as a reminder of collective responsibility.
The name ‘Subhash’ itself, inspired by the Malayalam film Manjummel Boys, was repeatedly mentioned in posts highlighting resilience and survival after being trapped for around 15 days on a metro pillar near the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium.
Hashtags such as #RealKeralaStory, #Kochi, #CatRescue and #Humanity trended locally, with many users sharing clips of the crowd applauding as the cat was safely lowered.
While the rescue operation involved technical hurdles and coordination between authorities and volunteers, the online discourse largely focused on what people described as a shared emotional moment — one that, according to many posts, showcased empathy beyond divisions.
Instagram update sparks another wave of reactions
An Instagram page named Kaloor Vibes shared a post-update after the rescue, showing Subhash at a veterinary institute, reportedly healthy, safe, and recovering under care.
The post triggered another flood of comments, many of them light-hearted and celebratory.
Some users jokingly referred to supporters as “poochandi fans”, using humour to describe the growing online following around the rescued cat.
One comment read: “You are the most famous celebrity now. Does he realise that?”
Another user wrote: “Imagine the stories he will have to tell his kids and grandkids.”
Several others posted heart emojis and messages calling Subhash a “fighter” and a “true survivor”. Many comments praised the rescuers again and expressed relief that the cat was receiving medical attention.
The tone across the comment section remained largely playful and affectionate, reinforcing how the incident evolved from a rescue operation into a widely shared feel-good story on social media.
