Kayamkulam: Kerala police made a significant breakthrough in the investigation of degree certificate forgery involving former SFI leader Nikhil Thomas. They found crucial documents related to the case, including the fake certificate, at the residence of the accused during a search for evidence on Sunday.

Apart from the counterfeit degree certificate issued in the name of Kalinga University, documents associated with admission, college identification card, bank passbook, and other materials have also been collected. However, Nikhil Thomas' mobile phone was not found at his home. It is believed that the device may contain substantial evidence pertaining to the case. Initially, Nikhil claimed to have left his phone in Karipuzhathodu (stream) near his residence, but upon reviewing CCTV footage from the area, it became evident that his statement was false.

The evidence collection process, which commenced at 11:30 am, concluded at approximately 2:30 pm.

The police will search the private agency in Palarivattom that issued the fake certificate. In order to gather further evidence, Nikhil will be taken to the agency, MSM college, and Kerala University. Additionally, the police are currently looking into whether anyone aided Nikhil in obtaining an equivalence certificate from Kerala University.

Efforts are underway to bring another suspect, Abin Raj, back from the Maldives. The police are exerting pressure on Abin Raj's relatives to facilitate his return. Alternatively, diplomatic channels will be utilised if necessary. Police said Nikhil claimed that it was through Abin Raj that Nikhil obtained the fake degree certificate. He transferred Rs 2 lakh to his mother's account.

The case is investigated by Kayamkulam DySP G Ajayanath, Inspector Mohammad Shafi and SI Udayakumar.
